Books and me

Nick Buchan - Deadline Zombie book reviewerFor as long as I can remember stories and books have been at the core of everything I do. Listening to stories occasionally got me out of trouble, telling tales regularly got me into trouble, while my fondness for a good yarn definitely drove me to become a journalist.

To know me, you should also know that I love words. I love books, I adore novels, and I live and breathe everything from science fiction, graphic novels and military history to crime, humour, philosophy, politics, even textbooks.

I love hearing and reading sagas, I love finding and telling anecdotes, I love digging into an issue to find out what is really going on, and just as importantly, why. I love deconstructing things in search of an answer – not always the answer, but as close to the truth as I can get.

To be honest, there wasn’t much choice. I can’t draw, don’t have green thumbs, hate speaking in front of crowds, while my ability with numbers extends no further than successfully spelling them.

My background is in journalism but I now work in the communications. Reporting is fun – it’s a great life if you’re young and single – chasing fire engines by day, riding the police scanner by night… but man do the hours suck.

I love cricket, documentaries and movies, and I’m addicted to Kickstarter. I will follow the mighty St George_Illawarra Dragons until they win another 11 in a row (or until I die, whichever comes sooner). I also dream of finding the perfect computer role-playing game – I have high hopes for Project Eternity.

I’m on the wrong side of 40 and live in Sydney with my beautiful wife and our German Shepherd.

Please enjoy Deadline Zombie.
